COMPONENTS:
Sole Plate

The sole plate is the thick, triangular-shaped slab of iron that forms the base over which the electric iron is built up. The bottom surface and edges are heavily chromium plated, to prevent it from rusting.
Pressure Plate

This plate is generally called the top plate as it follows the shape of sole plate
The Heating Element

The heating element is present between the sole plate and pressure plate. It is pressed hard between the two plates. The heating element consists of nichrome wire wound around a sheet of mica. The two ends of the nichrome wire are connected to the contact strips. The contact strips are connected to the terminals of the iron. There are two reasons for which mica is chosen in the heating material. Mica is a very good insulating material. Besides that mica can also withstand very high temperatures. The entire assembly of mica sheet, nichrome wire and contact strips are riveted together resulting in a mechanically sound and robust construction. There is an asbestos sheet, which separates and thermally insulates the top plate from the heating element.
Thermostat
The most important component that helps to regulate temperature in an electric iron is the ‘thermostat’. Everyone has heard of thermostats in reference to air conditioners, water coolers, maintaining temperature balance in the home, and a number of other appliances that deal in temperature control.

The basic function of a thermostat can be deduced from the name alone; the word is formed from two Greek words: ‘thermo’ (heat) and ‘statis’ (status quo or constant). As the name implies, a thermostat’s basic function is to keep the heat constant in a given setting.
Bimetallic strip

The thermostat in an iron uses a bimetallic strip, and as the name implies, a bimetallic strip is made up of two different types of metal – with dissimilar coefficients of expansion – that are bonded together. This means that in the presence of heat, they expand differently. This bimetallic strip is connected to a contact spring through small pins.

At moderate temperatures, the contact point remains in physical contact with the bimetallic strip. However, when the temperature of the iron exceeds a certain limit, the strip begins to bend towards the metal with a lower coefficient of expansion. As a result, the strip ceases to be physically connected to the contact point, the circuit opens and current ceases to flow.
WORKING::::
They have a heating element made out of a metal alloy that gets hot when electricity is applied. Wired in series with the heating element is a thermostat. The thermostat is made of two electrical contacts that are designed to bend away from each other as the iron gets hot. The knob turns a screw which control how hard the contacts must bend to separate and break the electrical connection. The higher the thermostat is turned, the hotter the iron must get before the electrical contacts separate. Then when the iron starts to cool, the contacts make connection again, thus keeping the iron steadily at the desired temperature.Basically you apply a voltage to a load (the iron’s heating element) which induces a current. The current through the load generates heat according to the formula Power = Current^2 * Resistance.

    Very well explained, I've a suggestion for your efforts, you can even explain the uniqueness of MICA. that it is a good conductor of heat but bad conductor of electricity. And it is possible only because of mica of the user would have experienced a fatal electric shock.
